Psychology Doctoral Programs in Florida

The state of Florida is in the southeastern part of the United States. It is the fourth most populous and eighth most densely populated state. Florida’s capital is Tallahassee. Its largest city is Jacksonville, which is home to the Jacksonville Jaguars, one of the three NFL teams based in Florida.

Florida is well-known for its cultural and family-friendly attractions. Some of its family-friendly attractions include Disney World, Busch Gardens, Sea World, Six Flags and its countless sunny beaches. For art lovers, Florida has Art Basel, an annual winter festival which features cutting-edge art works and installations from some of the world’s premier visual artists. For those interested in educational pursuits, Florida has many excellent colleges and universities to choose from, especially in the field of psychology.  Here we detail all of the doctoral level psychology programs available in the state of Florida.

Carlos Albizu University

The state of Florida is one of the more diverse states in the nation. With a large Hispanic population, many institutions in the state cater to its Spanish speaking students. One such school that includes multicultural understanding in its vision is Carlos Albizu University. In all of its programs, the school seeks to infuse the experiences of different cultures into each of its educational programs. Whether a student enrolls in the business, psychology, education or English as a Second Language (ESOL) program, diversity in all of its forms will be celebrated. Carlos Albizu University deems this important as its graduates will be working in what will be a world with many different cultures and creeds.

Psy.D in Clinical Psychology

Carlos Albizu University offers a Psy.D in Clinical Psychology. This degree is primarily for students who wish to become clinical psychologists. (Those who want to exclusively perform psychology research would have to apply to Ph.D programs with a research emphasis). As stated above, this school places a heavy emphasis on a multicultural education. This is shown in the program’s extensive efforts to recruit students from underrepresented groups, its selection of APA (American Psychological Association) approved internship sites that serve diverse populations, and its devotion to scholarship and other academic activities that will ultimately help many of the underrepresented, under-served and maligned groups in our society.

Students will be prepared to become clinical psychologists that give diagnostic and therapeutic services in an ethical manner that aligns with the regulations of the American Psychological Association. The Psy.D program will also prepare students to work as clinical supervisors, consultants and/or program administrators.

Students must choose from one of four concentrations:

  • Child Psychology
  • Clinical Neuropsychology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • General Practice

Accreditation

Carlos Albizu University’s Psy.D in Clinical Psychology is accredited by the APA’s Commission on Accreditation.

University of Central Florida

Department of Psychology

The University of Central Florida’s Department of Psychology trains researchers who can go on to do great work in academia and laboratories around the world. Students in the three psychology doctoral programs have the opportunity to do research in many of the department laboratories under the guidance of expert faculty. As student research is being conducted, they will often have an amazing array of equipment available to them, from those that study EEG and brainwaves to driving simulation gear. At UCF, students have the ability to chart their own academic course that will lead to a required dissertation.

Ph.D in Clinical Psychology

The clinical psychology program at the University of Central Florida gets its students ready for careers in research, academic and clinical environments. This program follows the scientist-practitioner model, which means that UCF’s clinical psychology program produces graduates who can work in both the clinical and research sides of psychology, allowing them to work in academia, applied health service settings, or both.

Students will be expected to complete their degree requirements in five years of full-time study. Most students will also be expected to keep their summers free for classes and other scholastic activities until they graduate. Everyone will be expected to take five years to complete the program, regardless of whether they enter with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Other academic activities that are expected of all students include participation in an APA-approved internship, master’s thesis, dissertation, and qualifying and comprehensive examinations.

Accreditation

The University of Central Florida’s Ph.D in Clinical Psychology program has been accredited by the APA’s Commission on Accreditation since 2003.

University of Florida

Department of Psychology

The University of Florida’s Department of Psychology has a lot to offer its graduate students. From the fellowships that are won by students every year to the half-dozen journal articles published by its award-winning faculty on an annual basis to the access to positions after graduation, the University of Florida acts as a rich resource for its graduate psychology students.

Even though a few things sets the University of Florida apart from other research universities, a big innovative program is its faculty-student apprenticeship model. In this program, faculty guide students in research activities and professional development. This relationship allows students to grow as both scientists and practitioners who will be capable of performing research and operating in various health service provider settings.

Ph.D in Counseling Psychology

One of the degrees that the Department of Psychology offers to prospective graduate students is the Ph.D in Counseling Psychology degree. Funding is plentiful as most first-year students can get nine-month teaching assistantships. Research assistantships are also available if a student desires to obtain one. Students also have the opportunity to compete for multi-year fellowships at such prestigious institutions as the National Institutes of Health.

College of Education

Ph.D in School Psychology

The main goal of the University of Florida’s School Psychology program is to educate future school psychologists that will foster good will, caring ears and psychological well-being among the students they will work with in their professional lives. Students must complete 136 credit hours, which includes a year-long internship and research experiences that lead up to the dissertation.

College of Public Health and Health Professions

Ph.D in Clinical and Health Psychology

What this means is that students interested in health psychology are better able to pursue their dual interests in health and clinical psychology while participating in an APA-accredited internship.
