As the southernmost state included within the New England region of the United States along the Long Island Sound to the south, Connecticut is the third smallest, 29th most populous, and fourth most densely populated state. Connecticut is known by a number of different aliases, including the “Nutmeg State,” the “Land of Steady Habits,” the “Constitution State,” and the “Provisions State.” Furthermore, Connecticut is famous for being the Insurance Capital of the World, second state to legalize same-sex marriage, birthplace of George H.W. For students interested in pursuing an advanced degree in the fascinating field of psychology, the following are the three doctoral training programs in psychology that have been accredited by the American Psychological Association within Connecticut.

PhD in Clinical Psychology

The PhD in Clinical Psychology program is designed to train professional psychologists who can use fundamental psychological theory and methods of empirical inquiry with expertise to better understanding complex human behaviors. Students can choose from five distinct areas of emphasis to concentrate their studies, which are Child and Adult Neuropsychology, Clinical Health Psychology, Developmental Psychopathology, Autism, and Cultural Psychology. After completing a series of practicum and clerkship experiences throughout the first four or five years of graduate studies, the final requirement to gain the PhD degree is completion of a year-long internship full-time in a clinical setting of their choice nationwide.

PhD in School Psychology

Offered in collaboration with the highly ranked Neag School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology, the PhD in School Psychology program adheres to a scientist-practitioner model through an integration of didactic and applied practice courses. Students in the program are required to complete a minimum of 90 semester of coursework beyond the baccalaureate level, including practicum, supervised internship, and 15 hours of dissertation research. The internship occurs on a full-time basis over a period of one academic year for at least 1,500 clock hours of supervised practice in a school setting. Although the program is designed so that students can complete the doctoral program after four years of full-time study, typical students usually need five to six years to fully satisfy all requirements.
