Psychology Doctoral Programs in Nebraska

University of Nebraska-LincolnDoctoral programs in psychology in Nebraska are only available at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, but that doesn’t mean there is not an opportunity for a world class education.

Nebraska, the Cornhusker State, is the 16th largest state in the country, but the 37th most populous. Farming, meat packing, and grain processing are the main industries in the state, with a focus on corn, sorghum, wheat, and soybeans. Though Nebraska might not seem like a top choice for an education in psychology, the program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been a leading destination for students looking to enhance their understanding of psychology and to earn advanced degrees for over 120 years.

Department of Psychology

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Psychology offers a number of graduate programs with an emphasis on research, teaching, partnership between faculty and students, and the sharing of ideas between specializations. The graduate program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is small enough for students to have close access to professors, yet is large enough to support research and high level academics. There are a number of activities that occur throughout the department, and this further enhances the high level of education that is available here. This department is one of the largest at the university and the program offers three focused opportunities for those seeking a Ph.D. in psychology.

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology

The clinical psychology training program from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is ideal for individuals who are interested in a career that involves understanding people from a scientific viewpoint, and applying this knowledge to human nature. In order to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the university, most students will take four years of training that is split into two sections. Following the first two years, the student will earn a master’s degree in clinical psychology and after additional training, a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Some students will also choose to add an additional year in order to earn their MLS, Master of Legal Studies, which can further enhance their careers in the future. An internship will also be required before the completion of the program. Most graduates with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology will go on to work in hospitals, clinics, schools, and even for local and state governments. Others will go on to become faculty members at colleges and universities throughout the country.

Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology

The counseling psychology program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was accredited in 1958 by the American Psychological Association and is one of the oldest, most well respected programs for counseling psychology in the country. The program has a history of producing exceptional graduates who go on to work as faculty members at other institutions, or begin their own counseling practices. Students with a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln also find employment in schools, hospitals, clinics, and with local, state, and even the federal government. The program is a four year program with an additional year for a professional internship. After approximately two years, students will be awarded their Master of Arts in counseling psychology and after successfully completing their internships, dissertation, and passing their comprehensive exam following their third year of instruction, students are awarded their Ph.D. in counseling psychology.

Ph.D. in School Psychology

The Ph.D. program in school psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is well respected throughout the country and continuously ranks high in research articles. The Ph.D. program is a six year program, and in the end, students will meet all requirements to become professional psychologists. The program is small enough that students are able to build up close relationships with faculty members, and through this is a rigorous program, it is also collegial as well as highly collaborative. During the instruction period, internships are required which place students in local schools, outpatient clinics, and area hospitals in order to enhance the high level or education that is offered from the university. When completed, the degree allows students to find employment in schools throughout the country, as faculty at some of the finest institutions, and as advisors for city, state, and local governments.
