Known as the Treasure State, Montana is home to untamed landscape, wide open spaces, and friendly people. There are a number of gorgeous national parks in the state, which has an area of 147,164 square miles, and a population of only just over one million people. That gives the state a population density of only six people per square mile. Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park are within the state’s border, but big skies are not the only thing you will experience. The department of psychology at the University of Montana is smaller than departments at other universities, but the size should be looked upon as an asset. With a small pool of available professors, students of psychology have access that is up close and personal with their instructors, something that other universities cannot offer. A world class education is available from the department of psychology at the University of Montana and with programs ranging from a B.A. degree in psychology to Ph.D. degrees in experimental, clinical, and school psychology, students can receive an outstanding education in one of the least densely populated states in the country.

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology

The program for a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. at the University of Montana was approved by the Education and Training Board of the American Psychological Association in 1965. Since then, the program has strived to build a model based on the interaction between clinical practice, psychological theory, and research. The program can be completed alone, or with an emphasis on child, adolescent, and family psychology, or exposure to neuropsychology. Graduates with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology go on to take faculty positions at colleges and universities or work in clinical settings caring for their own clients.

The program for a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. at the University of Montana was recently named as one of 10 accredited programs that have “exceptionally good outcomes for its students” by the October issue of Training and Education in Professional Psychology. Though this is the only choice when seeking out doctoral programs in psychology in Montana focusing on clinical psychology, it is a “hidden gem” according to this study.
