Psychology Doctoral Programs in Alabama

Located in the Southeast of the United States, Alabama is the 30th most extensive and 23rd most populous state with more than 4.82 million people calling the state home. Auburn University

Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, and Counseling

First founded in 1856, Auburn University has expanded to become one of the largest universities in the South and on the educational forefront for academic excellence. PhD in Counseling Psychology

Built upon the framework of the scientist-practitioner model, the PhD in Counseling Psychology program aims to provide students with grounding in scientific psychology, ability to link theory to research and practice, appreciation of cultural contexts, and understanding of the legal and ethical issues of counseling psychology. In addition to coursework, students in the program are required to complete a research project, comprehensive written and oral examination, dissertation paper, and a one-year clinical internship experience. Most students are able to complete the full-time degree program within five to seven years.

University of Alabama at Birmingham

Department of Psychology

Covering 88 blocks in the heart of the largest city in the state, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is currently ranked as the 152nd best college and 81st top public school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. Not only is UAB recognized by the prestigious Carnegie Foundation as one of the 51 universities with very high research activity and community engagement, it is also home to 11 programs that have been ranked in the top 25 of their field. The UAB Department of Psychology has consistently ranked within the top departments in the nation in terms of federal NIH and NSF research support. The department offers an undergraduate program and three graduate programs that have continuously represented the cutting-edge of teaching and research.

PhD in Medical Clinical Psychology

Sponsored by the unique blend of the UAB School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences, the PhD in Medical Clinical Psychology program is ranked as the 60th best Clinical Psychology program in the nation. The accredited doctoral training program places an extreme importance on medical psychology, thus covering topics in health psychology, behavioral medicine, neuropsychology, pediatric psychology, and gerontology. The program is designed to be completed within five or six years of full-time study, including a one-year clinical internship at a local clinical setting approved by the APA.

University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa

Department of Psychology

Situated in the city that is often considered to be the mental health center of the state, the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa has been consistently ranked among the top 50 public universities for more than a decade by U.S. News and World Report. The university also ranks first among all public universities nationwide in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars with more than 241 scholars among the 33,602 students on campus. In the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Psychology seeks to provide the highest quality education and training for undergraduates and graduates seeking careers in the psychology field. For the past four decades, the department has been accredited by the APA and produced eight to ten superior PhD students each year.

PhD in Clinical Psychology

The PhD in Clinical Psychology program is designed to prepare students to function as teachers, researchers, and clinicians in a variety of leadership or service positions throughout the Southeast. The Department of Psychology offers a full-service psychology clinic that serves a primary training facility for clinical doctoral students to gain valuable hands-on experience under the supervisor of a licensed clinical psychologist. Students can choose to specialize in one of four key areas of concentration, which are Clinical Geropsychology, Clinical Child Psychology, Psychology and Law, and Clinical Health Psychology. Students can also participate in a joint PhD in Clinical Psychology and Master of Public Health program with the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
